Acura Precision Cockpit Previews Next-Generation Interior and Technology Direction

Acura Precision Cockpit Concept - Smail Acura Blog

Acura recently revealed a near-production interior styling and technology concept, the Acura Precision Cockpit, while highlighting three major themes in mobility innovation – electrification, automated driving and connectivity. Fusing an ergonomic design with a modern operating system and a touchpad-based interface that goes beyond traditional approaches, the Acura Precision Cockpit complements the exterior design direction revealed earlier this year in the Acura Precision Concept. Together, the Acura Precision Concept and Acura Precision Cockpit form the fundamental building blocks for Acura's future vehicle design.

The Acura Precision Cockpit's seats, steering wheel and drive mode dial are inspired by the NSX, pointing toward a sporty future for the Acura brand. Brushed metal, natural wood, leather and alcantara finishes create a premium look and feel. Expressive surfacing and modern detailing, including copper amber LED lighting, accentuate the cabin's design aesthetic.

The instrument panel houses a wide, ultra-clear, 12.3-inch driver's display.  It sports a double-layered structure covered in stitched leather surfaces, providing a lightweight and high contrast image. A matching center display is placed high in the cabin, in a visually elegant location, close to the driver's natural line-of-sight. Custom colors and animations match the mood of the driving mode selected by the driver – white for Snow, blue for Comfort, red for Sport and orange for Sport Plus.

The center display is operated through a curved touchpad that is optimally positioned in the center stack. The touchpad is ergonomically designed to eliminate the need to visually locate a button or a switch.

Acura NSX Named Road & Track 2017 Performance Car of the Year

IMG_0951

Our Acura dealership was recently a hub of excitement as we had an 2017 NSX in house. The custom supercar is made-to-order, so we only see one of these every so often. Our salesmen, technicians, and even other customers stood in awe at the sight of this supercar, snapping pictures on their phones of the car they can't even get close enough to touch. So it comes as no surprise that the Acura NSX has been named Road & Track's 2017 Performance Car of the Year, besting eight of the world's finest sports cars by exhibiting a potent mix of performance, style and emotion.

The Acura NSX won this year's competition largely thanks to its unique driving experience. According to the feature in Road & Track, "For the first time in a hybrid automobile of any price or capability, technology has been placed firmly in the service of emotional involvement rather than in place of it." The magazine goes on to say, "Everything about the car—from the way in which the brake-by-wire pedal lengthens its travel when the brakes are hot to the manner in which the mid-mounted V-6 permits itself a bit of the ol' barbaric yawp when it's winding out in fourth gear—is intended to enhance the driver's involvement."

"Every aspect of the new NSX—acceleration, braking and cornering—is a precise, new experience," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. "Having the NSX recognized by Road & Track's esteemed group of evaluators is not only a great honor for the car, but a testament to the skill, determination and challenging spirit of our team—we are immensely proud."

Now in its fifth year, Road & Track's Performance Car of the Year award is chosen based on testing that takes place over the course of four days, two of which are dedicated to the back roads of Kentucky and Tennessee and two of which are spent on track at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

To be considered for the competition, cars need to be brand new or significantly revised for 2016. During the four-day testing process, the Road & Track editors and writers evaluate each car based on a combination of emotion, performance and value.

For the performance evaluation, editors take note of acceleration, braking, handling, shift points, sound level and weight, accounting for the weather conditions present during testing. They also evaluate the engine, transmission, drivetrain, steering, tires and brakes.

The 2017 NSX launched in the spring, challenging conventional supercar thinking with a three-motor, 573 horsepower, twin-turbocharged Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) powertraini. Produced exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the Acura NSX is the only supercar manufactured in Americaii.

The 2017 Acura NSX that won the competition featured Valencia Red Pearl Exterior paint with Semi-Aniline Red Leather and Alcantara® Power Seats, the Carbon Fiber Exterior and Interior Sport Package, Premium Audio, Signature Y-Spoke Wheels, Carbon Fiber Roof and Rear Decklid Spoiler, Carbon-Ceramic Rotors with Black Brake Calipers, Pirelli Pzero Trofeo R 245/35ZR 19XL front tires and Pirelli Pzero Trofeo R 305/30ZR 20XL rear tires. The MSRP of the tested 2017 Acura NSX was $201,160. The 2017 Acura NSX starts at $156,000.

The Acura NSX competed against eight other cars: Audi R8 V10 Plus, BMW M4 GTS, Corvette Grand Sport, Jaguar F-Type SVR, Lotus Evora 400, Mercedes-AMG C63 S, Nissan GT-R NISMO and Porsche 911 Turbo S.

First Gear SPECIAL EPISODE - 2017 Acura NSX - Review and Test Drive

In this very special episode of First Gear, we get an up close look at a 2017 Acura NSX. Since these vehicles are special ordered and custom built by the customer, we were unable to take this specific NSX on a test drive. BUT we do get to see footage of NSX Specialist Clint Robbins driving an NSX at the Acura Performance Driving School.

It's quite intimidating standing next to a supercar that is worth more than many people's homes. I was in awe of the advanced technology and design. And I really, really wanted to drive it! Not only was I unable to test drive it, we weren't able to go inside it to check out any of the features. I literally was not allowed to touch it. Still, it was an exciting day at the office.

For more information, please visit SmailAcura.com. All of our episodes of First Gear can be found on our playlist.

New 2017 Acura MDX Campaign "Designed to Wow"

Get ready to be wow'd. Acura is launching it's new advertising campaign for the 2017 MDX, and the first "Anthem" spot is featuring the Beck hit song, "Wow." This "kaleidoscopic psych-hip hop anthem" will be used in television commercials to highlight the luxury sport utility vehicle's bold exterior design and premium features.

"The new Acura MDX is a true performance SUV, and this campaign speaks to the 'Wow' factor that drivers will experience when they get behind the wheel," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura.

Smail's own David Fedor experienced the 'Wow-Factor' for himself when he reviewed and test drove the MDX as the first episode of our First Gear series.

2017 Acura MDX - Wow Commercial - Smail Acura Blog

Look for three commercials released, each highlighting features of the MDX. Acura says:

"Anthem" is all about energy, set to Beck's latest surrealist smash, "Wow," highlighting the MDX's outstanding handling in almost any driving conditions, its performance capabilities and bold new design. The music-driven spot expresses Acura's Precision Crafted Performance brand direction through the use of vivid colors, and generates excitement and enthusiasm through high-energy music.

The "Focus" spot incorporates one of the MDX's most important standard safety features – AcuraWatch™ – into the film with a moving representation of the benefits of the SUV's Collision Mitigation Braking SystemÔ  in an everyday driving scenario involving a father and son. The new MDX features the AcuraWatch™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard equipment on all grades.

In "Wake," the 2017 Acura MDX is driven through the California desert to show the SUV's power and precise handling. And after a day spent kicking up the sand, the MDX gets cleaned-up in a way that's as epic as the driving in the spot —a plane swoops in and drops water on the SUV while it speeds down a highway for a high-performance wash that leaves the MDX showcasing its glistening, upgraded exterior.

First Gear - 2017 Acura MDX Tech | Test Drive First Impressions

Last week I wrote about 10 Cool Features of the Acura MDX, and the accompanying video is now uploaded. Check it out and let me know what you think of our first show. We'll be doing more of these videos, and getting feedback from you will help us make sure we're getting all the features included that you want to see. What parts of the video did you like? What do you want to see more/less of in future episodes? What car would you like to see us review? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks!

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

Oversaturate me with stats and specs and my eyes will gloss over. It's good to know those things, sure, but what sells me on a car is how it feels, what's inside. Show me the bells and whistles, show me the hidden stuff. Let me play around. So Smail Acura gave me the keys to a 2017 Acura MDX [Tech Trim] and let me do just that. I sat in each seat, pushed buttons, opened all the doors, rolled the windows up and down, and I took pictures of what I found to be the "10 coolest interior features."

(Brief disclaimer before the list, this specific vehicle is an MDX with the Technology Package, or "Tech Trim" as they say. So some of these features might be standard, or might be different in other MDX models like the Advance or Entertainment Packages.)

1. Push Button Start & Electronic Gear Selector

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

This is the first vehicle I've been in with this feature, which is becoming more widely used in newer models. With the key fob in your pocket/purse and your foot on the brake, all you need to do is push a big red button and your engine starts. That's space ship cool. And gone, too, is the manual gear shifter. It's all electronic and you just need to push a button. And all the buttons are shaped somewhat differently, so you will intuitively know the difference by feel. Flat button is park, reverse pushes back, drive is big and round. It's weird at first because I'm so used to resting my hand on the shifter, but these buttons are cool.

2. Power Tailgate

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

While we're on the subject of conveniently pushing a button and things happening for you, I have to say I was dazzled by power tailgate. Quick fun story: in a dealership parking lot full of Acura vehicles, I couldn't immediately find this MDX. So I randomly hit all the buttons on the key fob hoping to hear a beeping horn or see flashing lights or something. What I ended up seeing was a tailgate sticking up in the air. "That's weird," I thought. Someone must be looking at that one, but where are they? It took another few embarrassing seconds until I realized it was the MDX I was looking for, and I was the one who opened it remotely with the key fob! Push a button and it opens, push a button on the tailgate and it closes. No heavy lifting, no unnecessary slamming. So easy, so cool.

3. Center Console - Arm Rest

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

Ok, there's lots of layers and functions to the center console, so much so that parts of the features show up in a couple different entries of this list. For starters, the top armrest is adjustable and can slide forward or backward for your comfort, cool. And it flips up to reveal a small compartment that you can store your wallet or phone. BUT, even that lifts up to a second, larger bin that can fit even more storage (and power outlets. Shhh, more on that later.)

4. Center Console - "Lower Console Door"

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

I listen to podcasts on my phone a lot during my commutes, and one thing that bugs me about my current car is there's no good place to put my phone. It's always sliding around. With this MDX, there's these neat "non-skid ribs" where your phone can stay put. And it's also a door than grants access to the lower bin without upturning the armrest, you can slide it or lift it up. Simple, convenient and functional. It's one of those tiny details that make everyday use better.

5. USB, Power and Auxiliary Jacks everywhere

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

My first car had a cigarette lighter that didn't work, so I was an angsty teen who couldn't power his portable CD player in the car like all the cool kids. Fast forward to today with this MDX and you'll find an overabundance of outlets, ports, and jacks. Hidden in the center console, front seats, middle row, third row, wherever you are and whatever you have, there's a place to plug into. Even angsty teens would think this is cool, just good luck trying to get them to admit it.

6. Sunroof/Moonroof

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

It's a hole in the roof that's supposed to be there and it opens and closes with a touch of a button, not complicated. Cool.

7. Push Button, Lockable Glove Compartment

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

Clearly I'm a fan of buttons, and the glove compartment doesn't disappoint in that respect. A simple touch and it opens up like Star Trek, only thing missing is the noises.

8. Adjustable Seating at the Touch of a Button

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

Quite honestly, these were the easiest seats I've ever folded down or moved around. The second and third rows can fold down and move with just a touch of a button located at the base of the chair or behind the head rest. Just two weeks ago while trying to load big bins into my own car, I spent several minutes trying to figure out how to fold down my seats. I've never stepped foot into an Acura and I figured these out in, literally, seconds.

9. Cargo Space with Chrome Tie-Down Hooks

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

There's plenty of cargo space, and with the second or third rows folded down it gets downright impressive. There are built in details that make transporting things so much easier, like recessed spaces to keep things from rolling around, or chrome tie-down hooks to secure larger items.  There's also a hidden "sub-floor storage area" underneath where you can put your secret things.

10. Hi-tech Cupholders

10 Cool Interior Features of the 2017 Acura MDX Tech - Smail Acura Blog

I'm saving my favorite for last. And while it may seem silly at first, it's a big deal. The cup holders in the front can adjust to the size needed. Look closely inside there, those grips can be pushed in if there is a larger cup or bottle. The water bottle I use is too big for my current vehicle and I'm always trying to balance it on top of my cup holders, or it rolls around in the seat next to me, or I hold it with my legs. It's a daily annoyance. PLUS this MDX comes with secret backseat cupholders that fold down from inside the row. Super cool.

So those are the 10 interior features of the 2017 Acura MDX [Tech Trim] that I thought were cool. There have been some I missed, and if so, let me know in the comments below! And check out SmailAcura.com for more information about available vehicles. Thanks for reading.

Acura Proud Sponsor of The Playbook's 32 Under 32

In his playing days, Magic Johnson ran up and down a basketball court with the number 32 emblazoned on his chest and back. Now, years later, Johnson is using the number in a different way. Through his website The Playbook by Magic Johnson, he has compiled a list to "recognize and highlight individuals who exhibit the professionalism, hard work, values and talents to lead the reimagining of possibilities for tomorrow’s business culture." It is his 32 Under 32.

From leaders in fields ranging from education, community service, and healthcare, to technology, sports, entertainment and business, these individuals come from a broad and diverse range of personal backgrounds and are asserting the passion, vision, commitment and skills to positively impact the world and inspire those around them.

So this list isn't only to recognize the achievements of others, it can be used to motivate and inspire you to achieve your own goals. Throughout the profiles, these individuals share their stories, their secrets of success.
