"The 2017 Acura NSX delivers the luxury of driving a sports car equally at home on the highway or the track, that also happens to have important 'green' credentials," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. "Its advanced hybrid drivetrain, impressive aerodynamics, use of lightweight materials, and significantly improved city fuel efficiency over the previous generation are all positive testaments to its distinction as the 2017 Luxury Green Car of the Year."

Acura NSX Design Includes Not-So-Subtle Nod to Flux Capacitor

2017 Acura NSX at Smail Acura in Greensburg PA - Smail Acura Blog

The Art of Interwoven Dynamics- Extraordinary By Design

Every detail of the 2017 Acura NSX has been carefully crafted with purpose. Together, the planes and curves, angles and contrasts, proportions and surfaces create an unmistakable identity uniquely its own.

According to Acura, "every aspect of the car must serve a purpose. So while NSX aesthetics are unmistakable, they’re not simply a matter of allure. Every character line, body panel, shape and crease; every air flow intake and outlet; every proportion and ratio is optimized to support its dynamic performance."

While many design elements also serve functional purposes, one of the more interesting design choices is clearly just a little fun. The engine compartment layout has been directly influenced by the Back to the Future films, says NSX chief engineer Ted Klaus.

“Those films were very influential when I was young,” Klaus told NSXPrime.com.  “Every kid wanted a DeLorean with a flux capacitor. I included one in almost every car design I dreamed up over the years,” he added. “I wanted to be Doc Brown when I grew up. So it was only natural to include the design in the new NSX. While Honda wouldn’t let me use plutonium, the car still incorporates many groundbreaking new technologies, just like the original NSX. Some might even say it’s a car from the future.”

Acura Celebrates New NSX Owners with Customized Films Tied to Each Unique, Built-to-Order Supercar

As owners of the 2017 Acura NSX begin taking delivery across the U.S., Acura has revealed a new campaign – "NSX Originals" – that brings each unique, built-to-order supercar to life in a customized, digital film.

Each owner film is customized to match the exact specs and options tied to their specific NSX, and features that vehicle's unique serial number. Click here to see Jay Leno's custom NSX, serial number three.

There are seven distinct versions of the film, each showcasing the power, dynamism and beauty of the NSX, alongside a unique development technology or manufacturing process that helped bring it to life. The campaign celebrates the originality of the concept behind NSX, or New Sports eXperience.

"The Acura NSX is a bespoke supercar inspired by an original concept, and this campaign speaks directly to that heritage," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura.

The campaign was developed by mcgarrybowen London, and is one of several customized perks of NSX ownership, including a custom 1:18 scale model, again crafted with exact exterior paint color, interior scheme, and factory installed features (carbon fiber pieces, brake calipers, custom wheels, etc.) as each unique NSX.

Performance Manufacturing Center and NSX Technologies Highlighted

Keyed to seven unique manufacturing processes, the NSX Originals video series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home to the next-generation NSX.

The seven processes detailed in the NSX Originals films are: Precision Robotic Weld technology, space frame construction, Zirconium Bath, state-of-the-art paint robotics, Three-Motor Sport Hybrid power unit, NSX custom hand assembly and the NSX Rolling Dynamometer.

  • Precision Robotic Weld Technology: The aluminum-intensive, multi-material NSX space frame and body is constructed entirely in-house, using advanced robotic MIG welding to ensure the highest levels of body accuracy and rigidity to support the NSX's incredible performance and world-class quality.
  • Space Frame Construction: The NSX space frame uses the optimal blend of materials, including aluminum, carbon fiber and ultra-high strength steel, to deliver incredible rigidity, low weight and precision-crafted performance.
  • Zirconium Bath: Every NSX space frame gets bathed in an environmentally friendly zirconium material that virtually eliminates waste from the coating process while protecting the aluminum-intensive structure from the elements.
  • State-of-the-art Paint Robotics: The NSX body is painted using start-of-the-art robotics as the first step in producing a truly world-class finish. This all-glass paint booth allows customers to see their NSX body in the finishing process.
  • Three-motor Sport Hybrid Power Unit: The NSX's revolutionary power unit is composed of a 75-degree DOHC twin-turbocharged V6, rear Direct Drive electric motor and 9-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, and front-mounted Twin-Motor Unit.
  • NSX Custom Hand Assembly: Each NSX is hand assembled by 16 highly skilled technicians to meticulous standards of quality at the bespoke Performance Manufacturing Center.
  • NSX Rolling Dynamometer: Each NSX undergoes rigorous testing to verify its dynamic capabilities before it leaves the Performance Manufacturing Center, including four corner weight checks and dynamic validation of power unit and braking performance.

Acura Precision Cockpit Previews Next-Generation Interior and Technology Direction

Acura Precision Cockpit Concept - Smail Acura Blog

Acura recently revealed a near-production interior styling and technology concept, the Acura Precision Cockpit, while highlighting three major themes in mobility innovation – electrification, automated driving and connectivity. Fusing an ergonomic design with a modern operating system and a touchpad-based interface that goes beyond traditional approaches, the Acura Precision Cockpit complements the exterior design direction revealed earlier this year in the Acura Precision Concept. Together, the Acura Precision Concept and Acura Precision Cockpit form the fundamental building blocks for Acura's future vehicle design.

The Acura Precision Cockpit's seats, steering wheel and drive mode dial are inspired by the NSX, pointing toward a sporty future for the Acura brand. Brushed metal, natural wood, leather and alcantara finishes create a premium look and feel. Expressive surfacing and modern detailing, including copper amber LED lighting, accentuate the cabin's design aesthetic.

The instrument panel houses a wide, ultra-clear, 12.3-inch driver's display.  It sports a double-layered structure covered in stitched leather surfaces, providing a lightweight and high contrast image. A matching center display is placed high in the cabin, in a visually elegant location, close to the driver's natural line-of-sight. Custom colors and animations match the mood of the driving mode selected by the driver – white for Snow, blue for Comfort, red for Sport and orange for Sport Plus.

The center display is operated through a curved touchpad that is optimally positioned in the center stack. The touchpad is ergonomically designed to eliminate the need to visually locate a button or a switch.

Acura NSX Named Road & Track 2017 Performance Car of the Year

Our Acura dealership was recently a hub of excitement as we had an 2017 NSX in house. The custom supercar is made-to-order, so we only see one of these every so often. Our salesmen, technicians, and even other customers stood in awe at the sight of this supercar, snapping pictures on their phones of the car they can't even get close enough to touch. So it comes as no surprise that the Acura NSX has been named Road & Track's 2017 Performance Car of the Year, besting eight of the world's finest sports cars by exhibiting a potent mix of performance, style and emotion.

The Acura NSX won this year's competition largely thanks to its unique driving experience. According to the feature in Road & Track, "For the first time in a hybrid automobile of any price or capability, technology has been placed firmly in the service of emotional involvement rather than in place of it." The magazine goes on to say, "Everything about the car—from the way in which the brake-by-wire pedal lengthens its travel when the brakes are hot to the manner in which the mid-mounted V-6 permits itself a bit of the ol' barbaric yawp when it's winding out in fourth gear—is intended to enhance the driver's involvement."

"Every aspect of the new NSX—acceleration, braking and cornering—is a precise, new experience," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. "Having the NSX recognized by Road & Track's esteemed group of evaluators is not only a great honor for the car, but a testament to the skill, determination and challenging spirit of our team—we are immensely proud."

Now in its fifth year, Road & Track's Performance Car of the Year award is chosen based on testing that takes place over the course of four days, two of which are dedicated to the back roads of Kentucky and Tennessee and two of which are spent on track at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

To be considered for the competition, cars need to be brand new or significantly revised for 2016. During the four-day testing process, the Road & Track editors and writers evaluate each car based on a combination of emotion, performance and value.

For the performance evaluation, editors take note of acceleration, braking, handling, shift points, sound level and weight, accounting for the weather conditions present during testing. They also evaluate the engine, transmission, drivetrain, steering, tires and brakes.

The 2017 NSX launched in the spring, challenging conventional supercar thinking with a three-motor, 573 horsepower, twin-turbocharged Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) powertraini. Produced exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the Acura NSX is the only supercar manufactured in Americaii.

The 2017 Acura NSX that won the competition featured Valencia Red Pearl Exterior paint with Semi-Aniline Red Leather and Alcantara® Power Seats, the Carbon Fiber Exterior and Interior Sport Package, Premium Audio, Signature Y-Spoke Wheels, Carbon Fiber Roof and Rear Decklid Spoiler, Carbon-Ceramic Rotors with Black Brake Calipers, Pirelli Pzero Trofeo R 245/35ZR 19XL front tires and Pirelli Pzero Trofeo R 305/30ZR 20XL rear tires. The MSRP of the tested 2017 Acura NSX was $201,160. The 2017 Acura NSX starts at $156,000.

The Acura NSX competed against eight other cars: Audi R8 V10 Plus, BMW M4 GTS, Corvette Grand Sport, Jaguar F-Type SVR, Lotus Evora 400, Mercedes-AMG C63 S, Nissan GT-R NISMO and Porsche 911 Turbo S.

First Gear SPECIAL EPISODE - 2017 Acura NSX - Review and Test Drive

In this very special episode of First Gear, we get an up close look at a 2017 Acura NSX. Since these vehicles are special ordered and custom built by the customer, we were unable to take this specific NSX on a test drive. BUT we do get to see footage of NSX Specialist Clint Robbins driving an NSX at the Acura Performance Driving School.

It's quite intimidating standing next to a supercar that is worth more than many people's homes. I was in awe of the advanced technology and design. And I really, really wanted to drive it! Not only was I unable to test drive it, we weren't able to go inside it to check out any of the features. I literally was not allowed to touch it. Still, it was an exciting day at the office.
